Gorbals wedding, 1899

The wedding of Rose Kirsh and Simon Michaelson, 8 June 1899.

Michaelson was born in 1875 in Haasemput which is thought to have been in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He ran a shop in Wishaw and in 1906 was one of the founder members of the Queen's Park Synagogue. His wife Rose (b 1878) came to Scotland from Schudas in Russia.

The wedding took place in the Grand National Halls at 127 Main Street, Gorbals. Halls such as the Standard and the Grand National were often hired for High Holy Days and other events, as the rapid increase in the Jewish population had created a great demand for the limited facilities available at the small prayer-houses and two larger synagogues which had opened in the Gorbals by 1899. The opening of the South Portland Street Synagogue in 1901 did much to improve the situation.
