Rhoda was the daughter of Joseph Fox (1851-1933) who ran the Rodmure School of Dresscutting at 212 Sauchiehall Street. He is credited with introducing the method of individual pattern-cutting to the city and trained many Glasgow seamstresses at his establishment. Rhoda's sister Muriel (b 1889) trained as a milliner in Paris, but after returning to Glasgow in 1910 opened a fashionable dress shop, Murielle's, at 432 Sauchiehall Street. Rhoda assisted in the shop while her husband kept the accounts.
