Streetscene, believed to be in the vicinity of Jail Square (now Jocelyn Square) c 1895. The photograph appears to have been taken from the front door of a public house - a "wines and spirits" sign dangles in the top left corner - and shows a licensed broker's premises. The precise nature of the business is unclear - the relevant section of the shop sign is obscured by shadow!
Jail Square lay at the foot of the Saltmarket just north of the Justiciary Buildings, and took its name from the prison there. The square was usually crowded with street traders each day until 1876 when the Bird and Dog Market was erected there (the city's Old Clothes Market building had opened nearby at Greendyke Street the previous year).
