Indentured blacksmith

An advertisement from the Glasgow Journal, 1 September 1763, for a blacksmith to go to the British colony of Maryland on the east coast of America. Like Virginia, Maryland was a major tobacco-growing colony and Glasgow merchants established their stores deep inland, along the Chesapeake River. There the Scots factors traded with local growers, buying and then shipping tobacco back to Glasgow for re-exportation to England, France and other European countries.
