James Brown

A portrait of James Brown (1813-1891) taken by his younger brother Duncan Brown.

James Brown was appointed Council Officer of the Town of Glasgow in 1841 and earned the nickname "the Perpetual Provost" because of his long service in the job. Brown assisted the Provost with a variety of tasks such as organising meetings and banquets and providing advice on matters of precedence and etiquette. He also held positions with the Clyde Navigation Trust, the Lighthouse Trust and the Water Commission.

Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documents aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s.
