Fossil Lepidodendron (giant clubmoss) found at Giffnock Quarry and dating to the Carboniferous Period (360-290 million years ago). Now extinct, giant clubmosses could grow to over 40 metres in height, much taller than modern British trees such as oak or beech.
Giffnock Quarry was the source of much of the blonde sandstone used in Glasgow buildings such as the the interior of Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and the tenements in Hampden Terrace.
