Glencoe painted by Horatio McCulloch(1805-1867) in 1864.
The teenage McCulloch was apprenticed to a house painter but moved on to study easel painting with the Glasgow artist John Knox (1778-1845). At the age of twenty McCulloch moved to Edinburgh as an illustrator and became part of the artistic community, meeting and being greatly influenced by the amateur artist the Reverend John Thomson of Duddingston (1778-1840). In 1827 McCulloch returned to Glasgow and established a reputation as a landscape painter, eventually becoming extremely famous. His landscapes show wild, unspoilt scenery with bleak, towering mountains and native wildlife, creating a vision of Scotland still popular today.
