Fossil Grove 1880s

A photograph showing excavations at Fossil Grove in Victoria Park in the late 1880s.

Remains of fossil trees called Lepidodendron were found in Victoria Park in 1887. The trees grew around 330 million years ago during the Carboniferous Period. Also known as the coal age, the Carboniferous lasted roughly 70 million years, from 360 million years ago to 290 million years ago. It was during this time that Scotland's coal seams were formed.
