Sam Bough

A portrait of Sam Bough painted in 1878 by Sir Daniel Macnee (1806-1882).

Bough was born in Carlisle in 1822. He was apprenticed to an engraver in London but he was unhappy there and walked home. Back in Carlisle Bough started producing watercolours but found it hard to sell them. He moved to Manchester in 1845 to take up employment as a scene painter at the Theatre Royal and at the same time continued to work as a watercolourist. Three years later Bough moved to Glasgow and was employed as a scene painter at the Prince's Theatre in West Nile Street. He continued to paint and produced some fine views of the city and its surroundings.

During the 1850s Bough developed a reputation as a landscape painter, receiving encouragement from Daniel Macnee. He moved to Hamilton in 1852, and later to the east coast of Scotland. Bough died in 1878, the year this portrait was painted.
