The Volunteer Bar at the corner of Charlotte Street and Charlotte Lane, Calton. The pub was run by a Mrs C Dobbin.
Charlotte Street had been one of the more exclusive addresses in Glasgow, but during the 19th century the increasing industrialisation in the area resulted in the departure of wealthy residents, often for the more salubrious West End, and the area acquired a more working class character.
