One of the four friends pictured here c 1900 was Jenny Young. She married Tom Lauder, a manager at the Parkhead Forge.
The other three women were teachers. By the end of the 19th century between 50 and 70 per cent of all teachers in the UK were women. Teaching was one of the few professions open to educated women, although they earned less than their male colleagues and until the 1940s had to give up their jobs when they married.
