A ticket certifying that Robert Pollock had attended French classes offered to private pupils by Monsieur St Ange Simeon, 1820.
In the early 19th century education was not as structured as it is today and there were few standard qualifications. Even people who went to university often did not obtain a degree, but instead asked the lecturer for a ticket to certify attendance in class.
