In 1902 this merit certificate was presented to George Crichton, aged 13, a pupil at John Street Public School in Bridgeton.
Compulsory education for all children aged from 6-12 years was introduced in the Education (Scotland) Act of 1872, which also led to the creation of the Scotch Education Department (subsequently the Scottish Education Department)to oversee education in the country. The local provision and supervision of education was entrusted to directly elected school boards.
The Glasgow School Board was set up in 1873 and consisted of fifteen elected members, with women as well as men permitted to vote in the elections. One of the Board's responsibilities was the building of new schools. The secondary school in John Street (later renamed Tullis Street) opened in 1883.
