Laying setts

A Glasgow Corporation Tramways works car and men laying setts in Clyde Street, early 1900s.

Most city centre streets were paved with granite setts (another word for paving stones) rather than tarmacadam. The setts were removed while tracks were laid or repaired and then replace.

This photograph was taken in Clyde Street. The works car is parked just to the east of the St Andrew's Cathedral (not in the picture). The buildings on the right have now been demolished, and replaced by new flats and a hotel.
