An advertisement for the Glasgow District Subway, c 1900.
The subway was opened at the end of 1896. The advert lists the advantages of the unusual cable system which hauled the subway cars round each of the tunnels - no steam and no smoke, with "perfect ventilation" (some might have disagreed with the latter comment!) and a speed of 15 miles per hour. The cars are described as roomy and commodious. Trains arrive every few minutes, and the journey time between stations is only two and a half minutes.
