Temporary bridge

The temporary bridge erected during the reconstruction of Glasgow Bridge, 1894-1896.

Thomas Telford's Glasgow Bridge was opened in 1835 but it was too narrow to cope safely with the heavy flow of traffic across the river by the beginning of the 1890s. The engineers Blyth & Westland designed a new bridge 80 feet wide to replace it (although re-using much of the stonework from the old Telford Bridge) and this temporary river crossing was built alongside to carry traffic while work was under way. The new Glasgow Bridge opened in 1899.
