Argyle Street 1882

Argyle Street in 1882.

This is a view looking east along Argyle Street. To the left is Union Street, and to the right is Jamaica Street. The pavements are packed with pedestrians, but in spite of this window cleaners have set up their ladders and are cleaning first and second floor windows on a building to the left. Robert Simpson & Sons' department store (the firm later amalgamated with Arnott & Co to form Arnott Simpsons) is on the corner of Jamaica Street.
