Glasgow Corporation Tramways stables, c 1890s.

When the Tramways department was given responsibility for working the city's tramways in 1894, it required 3,000 horses to operate services on about 60 route miles of tramways. The previous operator refused to hand over animals and equipment, but the department's was able to have its first new stables ready by February of that year and the horses (many purchased in Ireland) began arriving for training. Most of the Tramways employees were new recruits, but the staff, animals and equipment required to operate the municipal tramways were assembled in time for the commencement of the GCT services in July 1894.
