James Templeton & Co

An early 20th century advertisement for James Templeton & Co.

The advert shows the glorious carpet factory designed in the Italian Gothic style by William Leiper. The facade was modelled on the Doge's Palace in Venice, and intended to mask the more prosaic weaving mill behind. Disastrously, it collapsed during construction in 1889 killing twenty-nine women who were working in weaving sheds behind. The reconstruction of the facade was completed in 1891.
