A page from the catalogue of James Henderson & Co, coach builders, c 1860s.
This elegant carriage is one of the many models available from Hendersons. The firm had show rooms in North Street and at the corner of St Vincent Street and Bothwell Circus. If customers found nothing there to meet their needs they could browse through a catalogue of sophisticated and fashionable designs or submit their own designs and Hendersons would build the carriage to order. Hendersons also provided carriages for hire and would accept old carriages in part exchange for new.
The company won many awards for its carriage designs, including medals at the Paris International Exhibition in 1878 and the Royal Jubilee International Exhibition in Adelaide in 1887.
