A page from the catalogue of the coach builders James Henderson & Co, c 1860s.

James Henderson started out in business as a coach builder in 1838. After his death in 1865 his two sons kept the family-run company going. One of the sons, Archibald, served an apprenticeship with Hendersons before moving to England to work in several London carriage-making businesses. He then travelled to Paris to work with A Dupont, a famous Parisian carriage designer and to study at the Chambre Syndicale des Carossiers.

Archibald's wealth of experience was a great asset to the company when he finally returned to Glasgow. Hendersons were regarded as the most fashionable coach builders in Scotland.
