Lamp posts and lanterns made at the Barrowfield Iron Works, from a catalogue published in 1890.
The Glasgow Gas Light Co first installed gas lights in the city's streets 1817. Before that Glasgow streets had been lit by oil lamps. The gas lights were cheaper to run, and gas lighting soon spread throughout the city. Glasgow's first electric street lights were installed in 1879.
