James Livingstone was a station inspector who stayed at work during the General Strike of 4 to 12 May 1926. This certificate was issued by his employers in gratitude for his work at Central Station to keep the mail trains running.
The General Strike was called by the Trades Union Congress to support striking miners in their fight to oppose wage cuts and longer hours. Railwaymen as well as other transport employees, dockers, printers, builders and workers in other key industries were asked to withdraw their labour. However, the General Strike collapsed after just nine days and the miners were forced to end their strike three months later.
