Wartime recycling

Horses and cart recruited by Glasgow Corporation Cleansing Department to lead a recycling campaign during the Second World War.

Recycling became an important part of the war effort as imports of iron ore, timber and other essential commodities were disrupted and all manner of household products and foodstuffs became scarce. Waste paper and card were recycled for newspapers, packaging and other products. Housewives were encouraged to save food scraps to feed pigs, while old bones could be rendered down to make glue.
