James Dalrymple

James Dalrymple (d 1934) was General Manager of Glasgow Corporation Tramways from 1904 to 1926.

After joining the Tramways Department as an accountant Dalrymple was soon promoted to sub-manager. In 1902 he became Deputy General Manager and when John Young left in 1904 Dalrymple took the post of General Manager. Under his dynamic management the Glasgow tramways became more successful than ever. He improved the service by roofing over the open topped cars to protect passengers from the weather, and by introducing a night service in 1913. He also extended the tram tracks further out of the city, competing successfully with the railway companies. In 1923 his department took over the management of the Glasgow District Subway.

Dalrymple's autocratic manner was not always popular and at times caused difficulties with both councillors and staff. After a bitter controversy in 1926 he resigned and went to run the Sao Paolo tramway in Brazil.
