Bute Hall

Scaffolding in the University of Glasgow's Bute Hall during restoration work, 1950.

The main Gilbert Scott Building has been greatly restored and redecorated over the years. Just visible through the maze of scaffolding is the wooden screen which separates the Bute from the Randolph Halls, with the latter in the background. The platform where the senate sits and the Principal presides during graduation ceremonies is missing, but would normally be situated in front of the doorway in the screen.

The Bute Hall underwent another bout of renovation in 1986, at which time the ceilings were surfaced with special acoustic tiles and the walls and columns were painted with a fleur-de-lyes pattern and coloured with Chrichton Stuart blue (for the Marquis of Bute) and gold.
