University of Glasgow

The south front of the University of Glasgow's Gilbert Scott Building, floodlit for the University's fifth centenary in 1951.

The architect, George Gilbert Scott, had been impressed by the Old College building on the High Street and incorporated some of its features into his design for the new Gilmorehill building. There were two quadrangles, and access to the lecture theatres in the east quadrangle was by turret staircases in a similar style to those on the High Street building. In addition, in 1872 the Lion and Unicorn staircase was taken from the Old College and rebuilt on the southwest corner of the new building.

However for its time the new building was very modern in the construction methods employed, including the use of concrete, cast- and wrought-iron columns and beams, and cast-iron windows. The imposing south front looked out over Kelvingrove Park, giving an impression of solidity and grandeur, to the extent that it has become one of Glasgow's iconic images.
