Ygorra cover

The front cover of the 1928 edition of Ygorra, the magazine published annually by the Glasgow Students Charities Appeal Committee and sold in conjunction with the Charities Week appeal.

The title Ygorra was chosen as a phonetic representation of a Glaswegian saying "you've got to", and was used in each year's slogan to encourage people to give generously. Examples include: "Ygorra addus abbaw bee" for you've got to add a farthing (still commonly known as a "bawbee" in 1936); "Ygorra hannah ratannah" for you've got to hand her a sixpence (or tanner). All this before Stanley Baxter began teaching the world how to Parliamo Glasgow!
