Advertisement in the Glasgow University Magazine 25 April 1923 for "Arkit" collars from the outfitters Rowan & Co. The firm advertised regularly in GUM, aiming to attract students with an eye for the latest fashions.

Before the Second World War men's shirt collars were usually purchased separately and attached to shirts with collar studs, permitting men to alter the style of collar they wore with a particular shirt. Rowans advertised the "Arkit" as providing the perfect combination of style and comfort.

During the 1920s students at Oxford and Cambridge set the latest fashion for young men by dressing in flannel trousers and soft collars all day, abandoning the Edwardian practice of changing into different outfits at different times of the day.
