Queen Victoria

Front page of Glasgow University Magazine 30 January 1901, the first to appear after the death of Queen Victoria.

Queen Victoria died on 21 January 1901 at the age of eighty-one. She had reigned for sixty-three years, presiding over the industrialisation of Britain and the expansion of the British Empire and stamping her personality indelibly on the values of the time. Glasgow, the Second City of the Empire, shared in the nation's grief. There was an outpouring of elaborate mourning - all adults wore black, black and purple banners were hung from shop windows, and it was said that iron fences were given a fresh coat of black paint.

GUM appeared with black borders around the cover with a moving tribute from the Student Representative Council on the front page, and included an article on the Queen's life inside.
