Advertisement for M F Thompson, chemists, in Glasgow University Magazine 16 December 1891. As well as a dispensary for medicines, the shop had a retail department where customers could purchase perfumes, bathroom items, and over-the-counter medicines and remedies.

Thompson's had branches on Gordon Street, Glasgow; and Prince's Street, Edinburgh. The business became widely known for its popular own-brand products such as toothache specific, "Nervotine" nerve tonic, and anti-bilious essence. The firm was particularly well-known for its "Prize Medal Kola", which won a medal at the Edinburgh Exhibition of 1890.
