Cartoon by "Madge Wildfire" in Glasgow University Magazine 7 January 1891.
Witty and satirical cartoons and illustrations were regular features in GUM. In this example the invigilator thinks he has spotted a student cheating during an exam, but on closer examination is bemused to find a picture of the besotted youth's girlfriend - or ex-girlfriend from the look on the stricken student's face. Illustrations such as this often mercilessly caricatured both students and professors to comical effect.
"Madge Wildfire" was the pen name of a student by the name of William Parker Hanks, a regular contributor to GUM. He graduated MA in 1893 and became a clergyman. He died in Dorset in 1950.
