John Black Cowan (1828-1896) was Regius Professor of Materia Medica at the University of Glasgow 1865-1880. Like George H B Macleod and George Buchanan he served in the Crimean War, returning with them to work at Anderson's College - in Cowan's case, in the departments of medical jurisprudence and practice of medicine, 1856-1865.
At the University of Glasgow Cowan specialised in children's diseases, worked hard on behalf of the Senate and helped raise funds for the new University buildings in Gilmorehill.
