My House in Town

My House in Town

Coloured cartoon from the Northern looking Glass 23 January 1826 entitled "My House in Town". It provides a cross-section of a contemporary town house and what goes on in each room, from the wine and coal cellars at the bottom to the garret at the top.

Among the scenes are those of a butler and a servant making free with the household's stock in the wine cellar. The porter sleeps soundly as there is a knock at the door and the dog starts barking. A lady has her corset tightened in her dressing room, and the drunkenness of the gentlemen's withdrawing room spills over into the ladies' withdrawing room.
