Coloured cartoon from the Northern Looking Glass October 1825 entitled "Glasgow Sweepstakes". The caption notes that "a sweepstakes for various pieces of plate will take place in Glasgow... to be run for by all ages, classes, parties...".
The cartoon depicts men racing towards trophies and silver plates mounted on the statue of William III outside the Tontine building in Trongate. A street urchin attempts to trip one of the runners, and the man in red-striped trousers is hanging on the coat tails of the man in the brown jacket.
