It allows savings in heating and lighting costs, and has given the building its nickname "The Glasgow Greenhouse." In addition to the area shown, there are two entrance malls from Argyle Street and one from St Enoch Square.
The St Enoch Centre opened in 1989 on the site of the former St Enoch Station and St Enoch Hotel. The centre's ice rink was closed in 1999 during a major refurbishment programme to make way for more shops and an enlarged restaurant area. As well as more than eighty shops over two floors, the complex includes a seven-storey car park and Scotland's largest food court, with over 850 seats.
The St Enoch Centre has been owned since 1996 by Despa, a German Pension Fund.
