Rosebery and Story

Lord Rosebery, Lord Rector, and Robert Story, Principal, photographed at the University of Glasgow in 1901.

Archibald Philip Primrose, 5th Lord Rosebery, once declared that he had only three ambitions: to marry an heiress, to win the Derby and to become Prime Minister. He achieved all three. Rosebery was Prime Minister from March 1884 until June 1885 at the head of a Liberal government. He was elected Lord Rector at the University of Glasgow in 1899, holding office until 1902 and he was later to be Chancellor from 1908 until his death in 1929.

Robert Story was a leading Church of Scotland clergyman, who was appointed Professor of Ecclesiastical History at the University of Glasgow in 1886. In 1894 he was elected Moderator of the General Assembly. He was also editor of the Scots Magazine. He was appointed Principal in 1898 and held the post until his death in 1907. He presided over the celebrations in 1901 to mark the Ninth Jubilee of the University. To mark the occasion he launched a fund-raising campaign which collected £75,000 for new buildings.
