William R Reid

William R Reid, managing director of John Begg & Co, and of several subsidiary companies of the Distillers Co Ltd (DCL).

Born in Aberdeenshire, Reid trained as a lawyer and became a member of the Society of Advocates in Aberdeen in 1882. He married into the family of John Begg & Co, owners of the Royal Lochnagar Distillery on Deeside. In 1896 he entered the business as managing director. He worked in London from 1902 to 1910, mainly expanding the export side of the business, before moving to Glasgow in 1910.

Reid continued to travel the world building the export trade of John Begg. The business was acquired by DCL in 1916 and Reid stayed on to manage four of the company's Glasgow-based subsidiaries, the others being J & R Harvey, Daniel Crawford & Son and John Hopkins & Co.
