Beach fashions provide a photo-opportunity at Ardrossan. The cartoon appeared in The Bailie in July 1920, in an era when summer holidays for most Glaswegians meant spending Glasgow Fair in one of the Clyde coast resorts.
It is no accident that the photographer was assumed to be from The Bulletin. From its foundation in 1915, The Bulletin gave particular emphasis to the publication of photographs. It concentrated at first on showing the activities of the aristocracy and celebrities but soon began to publish scenes of everyday life as well as newsworthy events. In 1923 The Bulletin merged with the Scots Pictorial to form the Bulletin and Scots Pictorial, which appeared until 1960. A full set of the newspaper is held in the Mitchell Library.
