Sauchiehall Centre

Summer sounds in the city centre as a clarinet duet set the feet tapping outside the Sauchiehall Centre in Sauchiehall Street pedestrian precinct c 1990. Street entertainers have become a feature of the section of the between Rose Street and West Nile Street since it was pedestrianised at Christmas 1971.

The Sauchiehall Street Centre, as it was originally known, opened in 1974 on the site of the former Pettigrew & Stephens department store. At that time, the eight-storey building was the largest venture of its kind to have been built in the city centre. It included five retail stores with Arnotts as the flagship, numerous smaller shops, and a food court. The upper three levels provided parking space for 425 cars.

Arnotts closed in 1986 and the name Sauchiehall Centre was adopted following redevelopment. A further redevelopment in 2002 involved the conversion of the traditional atrium-mall into dedicated retail units, all directly accessible from street level.
