The Murano Street redevelopment marked a change in housing policy for Glasgow District Council, whereby tenements were renovated rather than demolished as had been happening for several decades. In this development, 475 dwellings were converted into 314 with full amenities. The backcourts, previously neglected, were landscaped. The exteriors were sandblasted to clean the stone. The project was completed in October 1978, eight months ahead of schedule.
The success of the project was confirmed when the vast majority of tenants, who had been decanted to newer houses on peripheral estates for two years, opted to return to their old homes rather than remain in outlying estates.
