Kenny Dalglish with Lord Provost Robert Gray, pictured for the June 1987 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin signing the register of Freemen of Glasgow.

Born in Dalmarnock in 1951, Dalglish joined Jock Stein's Celtic team in 1967. He was a natural footballer who was equally comfortable in midfield or as a striker. With Celtic, he made 204 league appearances scoring 112 goals. He won four Scottish League Championships, four Scottish Cup medals, and one Scottish League Cup medal.

In 1977, Dalglish was transferred to Liverpool for a record transfer fee of £440,000. Further success followed, including scoring the winning goal in the European Cup Final in his first season. He was appointed the club's first ever player-manager in 1985, and the team won the "double" in his first season in the role. After leaving Liverpool, Dalglish managed Blackburn Rovers to a Premier League championship win in 1995, before less successful spells at Newcastle United and Celtic.

Dalglish was capped a record 102 times for Scotland, scoring 30 goals to equal Denis Law's record.
