A facsimile of the first page of The Protestation of the General Assemblie..., 1638, the first publication to be printed in Glasgow. The Glasgow Assembly defied the wishes of King Charles I by abolishing the rule of bishops in the church, and their defiance led to the outbreak of war in 1839 between Covenanters and Royalists.
