Dominican Seals

The seal on the left of this image is that of David Raite (fl 1427) who was Vicar-General of the Friars Preachers of Scotland for at least forty-one years until 1468. It is adorned with the figure of St Andrew, who carries the cross on which he was crucified while a friar kneels at his feet.

The Order of (Friars) Preachers is the proper name for the Dominican Order, whose members are often known as the Preaching or Black Friars. The Order came to Glasgow during William de Bondington's tenure as Bishop of Glasgow and established a priory there in 1246.

The seal of the Friars Preachers of Glasgow is on the right. It contains a represention of the Coronation of the Virgin.
