A Thomas Annan photograph of a portrait of James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin and 12th Earl of Kincardine (1811-1863). The painting was by Sir Francis Grant.
The earl was a diplomat and Governor-General of Canada, 1847-1854. He was elected Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow in 1859 and served briefly as Viceroy of India.
