William Hunter

A Thomas Annan photograph of a portrait of William Hunter of Long Calderwood (1718-1783). The painting was by Sir Joshua Reynolds.

Hunter, the brother of the surgeon John (1728-1793) studied at the University of Glasgow from 1731 to 1736 before moving to Edinburgh and then London to pursue a successful career as a physician. He was the author of several important works on anatomy; Queen Charlotte's personal physician and the first professor of Anatomy at the Royal College. On his death in 1783 he left his collections of books and many items of scientific interest to the University of Glasgow. These formed the original collection of the Hunterian Museum.
