Sir James Anderson

A Thomas Annan photograph of a portrait of Sir James Anderson (1800-1864). The painting was by Daniel Macnee.

Anderson was born in Stirling, the son of a merchant, and trained with a Glasgow merchant before becoming a partner in his business. With his brother he founded J & A Anderson, textiles manufacturers in Candleriggs with a warehouse in Princes Square. He was elected a councillor in 1842 and was Lord Provost 1848-1851. He was knighted by Queen Victoria during her visit to the city 1849.

Anderson was elected MP for the Stirling Burghs and served in Parliament until 1859. He retired from business in 1863.
