Dunlop was the son of Colin Dunlop of Carmyle, a tobacco merchant and Lord Provost of Glasgow, 1770-1771. John followed in his father's footsteps by becoming Lord Provost, 1794-1795. John married Jessie, the daughter of Provost John Murdoch, in c 1780. He was a member of the famous Hodge Podge Club and penned several poems and songs such as "Here's to the year that's awa'" and "O dinna ask me gin I lo'e ye".
