A Thomas Annan photograph of a self-portrait by the artist John Graham Gilbert of Yorkhill (1794-1866).
Gilbert, the son of a West Indies merchant, studied painting at the Royal Academy in London. After travelling around Italy for two years and spending some time in Edinburgh, Gilbert returned to settle in Glasgow following his marriage in 1834. He had been made a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1830 and painted until his death at Yorkhill in 1866.
A number of Gilbert's portraits appeared in an exhibition of notable Glasgow figures which was held at the Town Council's Galleries on Sauchiehall Street in 1868. This images is taken from the illustrated catalogue which Thomas Annan produced to accompany the show.
