Mungo Nutter Campbell

A Thomas Annan photograph of a portrait of Mungo Nutter Campbell of Ballimore (1785-1862). The painting was by Sir Henry Raeburn.

Campbell was the eleventh child of the collector of customs at Port Glasgow. He matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1799. In 1809 Campbell married his cousin Helen, daughter of the founder of the West Indies merchants John Campbell Snr & Co. He became a partner in his father-in-law's firm and eventually its principal.

In 1811 Campbell inherited the estate of Dellingburn. He purchased Belvidere in 1813 and sold it seven years later, around the time he acquired Ballimore on Loch Fyne. He was Dean of Guild 1823-1824 and Lord Provost in 1825-26.
